Lucifer Demon 85 Race team and program

The Demon 85 is a high tech one design racing trimaran, designed and built by Blair Boats. The boat fits into the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Clubs 8.5 meter box rule. There are currently over 20 boats racing in this rule in New Zealand, this is the fastest growing class in NZ, with many new boats under construction. Lucifer is the first of the Demon 8.5s, there is currently one more under construction.
Demon 8.5
The Demon 8.5 is a verstile racing machine. There are a number of features which stand this boat away from the rest. The boat has 320% boyancy in the floats, which enables the main hull to fly up wind. There is a huge amout of boyancy in the bows of both the floats and main hull, this combined with the back beam being right on the stern of the boat allowing the crew weight aft, keeps the bows up.
The boat has carbon foam box section beams with water stays, the beams are 5 meters apart, making the boat an increadibly stiff and rigid structure. The Demon is set up for sailing fast with a cockpit and two winches on each float. Lucifer has an 11.2 meter roating and canting carbon wing mast, with a 2m square top main. This gives the boat a low center of effort, but not lacking on sail area, with 59sqm up wind and 110 sqm down wind. A 44 sqmr mast head code 0, can be used upwind under 8 knots giving the boat plenty of power in the light.
The Demon 8.5 is an increadly powerfull boat, 6.5 meters wide with massive floats it has a simmilar righting moment to a 50 foot canting keel monohull. The Demon has the sail area to match this power, and still at the same weight as a catarmaran the same size. Because of the low center of effort and boyancy in the bows the demon can be pushed hard and is safer than its opposition.
The Demon 8.5 has a double and single berth that makes this little pocket rocket the perfect weekend cruiser. Having a boat that does 20+ knots really opens up your crusing ground, pop over to Barrier in a couple of hours or the bay in 8 and a half -its, already been done!! and on the second sail!!.
